Learn Birdsong in the Park

It’s early spring and as the local resident birds embark on the breeding season this is the best time to start getting to grips with birdsong! This introductory course for up to 8 people runs on four consecutive Tuesday mornings (8.30-10.00am), 14th March to 4th April, and involves a mix of classroom and outdoor activities. You will gain confidence at identifying common bird species by sound including robin, wren, dunnock, blackbird, song thrush and many more, enabling you to develop your listening skills, connect with nature, and enhance your appreciation of birdsong more generally. Each week we will meet at the Learning Centre before walking out into Centre Vale Park to listen to bird calls and songs, focusing on certain species and how to distinguish them. We’ll take advantage of a parabolic microphone paired with silent disco headphones to listen in detail to each bird’s song. Back in the classroom we’ll review what we’ve learnt and use sonograms to understand birdsong in more depth.
