Mushroom Cultivation – four weeks

This series of workshops delivered by Stockport Fungi will take place over four weeks; covering everything you need to know to be able to grow your own mushrooms.
Stockport Fungi is a small scale mushroom farm that supplies people and restaurants across Stockport and Manchester. They also deliver educational workshops and courses to help people cultivate their own mushrooms. instagram.com/stockportfungi

Where: Climate Challenge College, Todmorden
Suitable for: complete beginners with no prior experience, those who would like to gain further practice of their existing skills, or anyone who is interested in mushroom cultivation using recycled and repurposed materials at home, outdoors or as a small business.

- Week 1 – Oyster mushroom cultivation from recycled materials
- Introduction to the basic theories of mushroom growing
- Different types of substrate and preparation
- Pasteurisation of materials to cultivate mycelium
- After care and advice for future harvests
- Week 2 – Outdoor mushroom cultivation
- Preparation theory for mycelium plugs
- Log selection, preparation and inoculation
- Making a mycelium raft
- Theory around how outdoor mushroom farms operate
- Week 3 – Home cultivation (largely theory based)
- How to start a more advanced mushroom cultivation practice at home
- How to expand to produce mushrooms on a larger scale
- How to produce grain spawn and substrate production
- Incubation and grow room conditions
- Week 4 – Creating forms from mycelium
- Growing forms with golden reishi mycelium
- Exploring the potential for uses of this amazing hydrophobic, inflammable, light, insulating and biodegradable material
- Drawing on techniques covered in the previous workshops
- Email support to incubate and finish at home
